From a recent work by Santiago Sierra, the article studies the production of critical discourses and theoretical art research as a relevant factor in the pursuit of autonomy. Specifically, three formats in which these discourses appear —journalism, specialized criticism and academic research— are presented and it is analyzed how they influence the possibilities of an art piece of being autonomous. Thus, a dialogue is established with modern proposals of separation between art and other spheres, and it is problematized to what extent this independence is possible today, when the works circulate accompanied by text. The nature of these texts is also studied as content and in order to finish, the relevance of production in front of these discursiveness is questioned.
