Leptochloa crinita is a native perennial forage grass of high forage value. It has inflorescences formed by clusters of spikelets. Each spikelet is composed of a fertile anther containing the caryopsis and 1-2 sterile anthers. The lower lemma of each spikelet is triaristate. Handling of the seminal unit is complex due to the edges and requires conditioning for removal. The objective of this work was to analyze the effect of different types of conditioning on germination. The treatments were manual de-aristate and fire de-aristate, maintaining the seminal structures and degumming leaving only the caryopsis. The spikelet was used as a control treatment. The trials were carried out in germination chambers, the seeds were placed in plastic trays under controlled conditions of light and temperature according to Eragrostis curvula protocol; there were four replicates for each type of conditioning. Germination after fire de-aristate was significantly lower, while degummed caryopsis germinated faster. These observations show that degumming did not affect the caryopsis germination while treatments that maintain the seminal structures promote some kind of germination dormancy except for fire, which seems not to be an adequate conditioning method.
