The translated text is a brief historical overview of the social and union struggles of construction workers, mainly in France, which were controlled by the establishment of reinforced concrete as the predominant technology. The text was written in 1980 and is part of a long production that the author, a native of Brazil, produced during his exile in France, in which he provides elements to rethink the history of architecture from the cantero or construction site. Ferro proposes to reconstruct the history of the production of spaces by looking at the work processes, the forms of organization of workers, the adoption of new technologies, the role of technicians, among other aspects. The text was the basis for the conference that Ferro himself gave in the framework of the IV Encuentro Latinoamericano de Arquitectura Comunitaria, held in the city of La Plata in 2018, the first and only conference that the author gave in a Latin American country other than Brazil. The latter speaks to the lack of knowledge of Ferro's work in the Spanish-speaking world, which the present translation seeks to begin to settle. Taking up these stories "from below" allows us to recover the critical perspective and provides fundamental elements to return to the separation between manual and intellectual labor and to the processes of work in the production of space, dimensions often overlooked by urban studies.
