Unused railways and their infrastructure represent valuable heritage and landscape assets that attract a growing number of visitors. In Argentina, many railway lines have been abandoned, leaving their towns and heritage in a state of uncertainty and deterioration. Within this context, the study, developed as part of a doctoral thesis chapter and framed within the project Ciencia al Viento: Bici-tren Cahuel Huinca, aimed to assess the viability and potential of scientific tourism in Argentine Patagonia, focusing on La Trochita (the Old Patagonian Express). Its objectives included proposing alternatives for tourist, scientific, and sporting interaction, as well as offering new ways to enjoy and interpret the railway landscape and to foster local development. The research, exploratory-descriptive in nature and employing a mixedmethods design, involved field assessments, interviews, comparative analyses, and the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The findings highlight that the synergy between tourism and science can generate innovative opportunities and distinctive tourism and social products through a concrete and differentiating proposal, suggesting potential activities that currently lack demand. Nevertheless, its practical implementation requires a multi-level and cross-sectoral approach, alongside regulatory adjustments enabling the use of the railway line for such activities. This work has been recognised as of legislative interest by the Honourable Legislature of Chubut and as of tourism and social interest by the Legislature of Río Negro.
