Urban growth has increased the use of asphalt pavements, which contribute to the formation of urban heat islands (UHI) due to their low albedo. This study evaluates asphalt mixtures modified with titanium dioxide (TiO2) to improve urban sustainability. A MAC F10 type mixture with 2% TiO2 incorporated using the dry process was used and compared to a conventional one. The opto-thermal properties (albedo and emissivity) were measured experimentally and the thermal behavior was simulated using PLMTerm software under historical weather conditions from the cities of La Plata and Salta (Argentina). The results showed that the mixture with TiO2 had a higher albedo (0,17 compared to 0,10) and a higher emissivity (0,97 compared to 0,91), which resulted in a significant reduction in the total energy transferred to the environment. It is concluded that the incorporation of TiO2 constitutes an effective technology to mitigate UHIs, reduces energy consumption for cooling and contributes to environmental sustainability.
