The present article attempts to inquire into the musical programming of several concerts organized by the official Commission of the Centennial on the occasion of the 1928’s Bahía Blanca’s foundation anniversary. This event constituted a consecration of the progress in the city where the Arts and music in particular, played a prominent role. It was in this context that the Himno a Bahía Blanca [Bahía Blanca’s anthem] was released, written by Carlos Alberto Leumann and musicalized by Pascual De Rogatis. The performance was in charge of a choir and an orchestra integrated by local musicians. In addition, the stable bodies of the Colon Theater of Buenos Aires performed in successive presentations. We maintain that these centenary concerts sought to intervene in the construction of national identity but also attempted to consolidate the differences between cultural elites and popular sectors. From a perspective that is inscribed in Cultural History but incorporates theoretical tools of Sociology, Microhistory and Musicology, we intend to demonstrate the potential of those programming to analyze the links between music and local society, as well as the tensions inherent to the selection of the repertoires.
