In recent decades the use of mechanical vibrations to generate electrical energy has been a subject of growing research in the field of engineering. The main idea is the possibility of feeding lowpower devices from the energy available in the environment. Natural sources of energy are characterized by being inexhaustible, so they represent a better alternative to traditional batteries that store a finite amount of energy, are usually quite bulky and may contain dangerous chemical constituents. In this work, the equations of motion of a three-dimensional beam finite element are developed using Generalized Hamilton’s Principle. A Rayleigh beam model is adopted, and non-linear terms are included in the strain tensor to consider the coupling between the axial load and bending. The element incorporates two embedded piezoelectric sheets and two electrical resistances that are used to dissipate energy. This element is useful for modeling aeroelastic energy harvesters and will be implemented in future work to model multifunctional wing structures. As a complement, the governing equations for a finite element with piezoelectric actuators are presented.
