For a long time, Argentinian historiography, particularly those belonging to Chubut, has endeavored to create a strongly stigmatized and stereotyped image regarding interethnic relations at San José Fort (Valdes Peninsula, Chubut Province, 18th-19th centuries). From this perspective the relation between Indigenous and Spanish-Creoles is characterized in dichotomous terms –Indigenous/barbarian/violent and Hispanic-Creole/ civilized/martyrs- and reduced to one instant: the episode of the attack that allegedly would have ended the colonial settlement. On this basis, this paper aims to unravel the genealogy of this image, how these meanings are currently materialized, reproduced and fixed in local and regional memory and its implications for the interpretation of the history of the locality. Interpellation of this image to light of recent historical and archaeological research allows to reveal the inherent coloniality to the arguments behind the representations, showing its force even in the present.
