This paper is based on the premise that, due to the growing interest in the various fields that study happiness, it is essential to have a clear, realistic and beneficial notion applicable to the entire community. For this, it is necessary to evaluate the role of suffering, if its presence allows the possibility of happiness, examining if it is composed only of pleasure, if it is impossible to achieve because of pain, or if there is another alternative. First, the current state of the scientific disciplines that study happiness will be reviewed. Then, different visions that have arisen throughout human existence about the possibility of happiness in a world in which suffering predominates will be elaborated, as well as the validity of their affirmations and the usefulness of their conclusions. Different visions about suffering and happiness will be developed, finally presenting a position that does not see happiness and suffering as opposites, but as complementary. The paper will seek to defend this last conception of happiness, understood in terms close to the conception of Aristotelian eudaimonia.
