The International Law of Human Rights prohibits both direct and indirect discrimination on the basis of religion. This prohibition does not mean that States cannot under any circumstances use religion as a criterion of legal distinction. The precedents of international bodies offer some clues as to which distinctions based on religion are acceptable and which are not, although they do not give a uniform and unequivocal answer in this regard.
