The variability in household income associated with the job instability of its members was a characteristic feature of the functioning of the Argentine labor market from the end of the eighties to the beginning of the current decade. The high incidence of unregistered employment in the Argentine occupational structure and the greater exposure to unemployment faced by these workers are among the factors that help to understand this phenomenon. Among other effects, fluctuations in labor remunerations have an impact on the average or more permanent income of the recipients –individuals and households– thus affecting the inequality of its distribution. After the 2001 crisis, Argentina went through a phase of economic recovery accompanied by a noticeable improvement in various labor and social indicators. However, after a strong reduction in inequality, progress in the levels of equity moderated. Such evolution suggests that job instability continued to be a relevant feature in the labor market during that period. This document proceeds to analyze the fluctuations in income and its relationship with the levels of inequality during the period from 2004 to 2007. The study of this topic has direct implications for the design and implementation of policies that take into account dynamic aspects of social welfare.
