Precision Medicine uses genetic and other information to personalize the diagnosis and treatment of diseases with the goal of improving health outcomes both individually and at the population level. Genomics, which focuses on the study of the genome, plays a fundamental role in Precision Medicine, providing key knowledge for the development of predictive and personalized therapeutic strategies. Molecular biology techniques, such as massive sequencing, have allowed the identification of molecular biomarkers with applications in diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment selection. Pharmacogenomics, on the other hand, investigates how genetic variations influence the response to drugs, facilitating the development of personalized therapies and the discovery of new pharmacological targets. In the field of Microbiology, the importance of the genomics of pathogenic microorganisms and the microbiota is highlighted, as well as the need to develop effective treatments for zoonotic diseases and address antimicrobial resistance. The implementation of Precision Medicine raises ethical and economic challenges that must be carefully considered. It is crucial to promote the development of skills and learning abilities in health professionals, fostering interdisciplinary cooperation. Professional training in molecular biochemistry and precision drug design must adapt quickly to address the demands of this new era in Medicine.
