This work reflects on how the "elite", "oligarchy" and "hegemonic class" are categories which have been used in Mendoza historiography. Our interest is to be able to determine if the employment of these notions is done “a priori” on the object of study, or on the contrary, if from the object itself new sociocultural variables are built that allow its definition, which would indicate a correct application of these categories. In this way, our final objective is to be able to select which of these notions should be applied to our research on the practices and representations of death in a temporary arch extended between the late XIX and early.
