The concept of capitalist development as a force tending to homogenize the eco-nomic structure on an international scale can be traced in certain passages of Karl Marx’s economic work, including the prologue to the first German edition of ‘Capi-tal.’ However, this thesis seems to contradict other lesser-known writings in which the author outlines considerations about the relationship between societies with different degrees of development. The connection between these different moments in his work has sparked numerous interpretations. In this article, we discuss José Aricó’s interpretation, which has been exposed in his book Marx y América Latina and also had a significant impact in this region. We propose a different interpre-tation that takes the ideas from Pablo Levín. In our point of view, this allows us to make a series of necessary analytical clarifications so each of these moments in Marx’s work becomes coherent within a more advanced theory of capitalist development. Towards the end of the paper, we draw some conclusions from the previously stated arguments.
