This article aims to rescue a semiotic conception of memory as a constitutive form of cultures as well as a creative store of meanings. Drawing from Yuri Lotman’s conjectures, I will deploy the hypothesis that the dispute between permanence and renovation is the semiotic condition for the construction of cultural identities. This profoundly dialogic experience, where Mikhail Bakhtin’s socio-critisism resonates, will be confronted through the aesthetic transmutations encountered by one of poet Arthur Rimbaud’s few photographs. The passage of that iconic image, which recalls some of the drifts of the enfant terrible (traveling young man, queer icon, and rebellious artist), will also attest to the survival of a transgression typical of modern sensibility that, however, seems to find a certain renewal in postmodern attraction to the rapture and the subjective tendency that Frederic Jameson defines as intensity.
