In this work, the effect of the incorporation of silica particles on the morphology, chemical composition, corrosion resistance and adhesion to a polymeric coating obtained from a polyurethane emulsion with low solvent content was investigated. The corrosion re - sistance of the zinc coating, either with or without the poly urethane film, was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a 0.05 mol/L NaCl solution. The characteristics of the polymeric film such as adhesion to the zinc coating, porosity, degrees of rusting and blistering were investigated. The incorporation of silica particles in the zinc coating promoted good adhesion to the polymeric coating. The combination of the two types of coatings, zinc with silica particles and polymeric layer, provided good corrosion resistance to the AISI 1010 steel substrate showing that this could be an alternative coating for the protection of steels in environments of mild corrosiveness.
