Within the framework of globalization, inevitable with little or no autonomy of control by nations, internationalization involves responses from higher education systems in order to guide policies based on the specific purposes of regions, countries and institutions. Latin America faces three decisions in this context that has changed radically in the last two decades: 1) Whether or not to be part of internationalization, which implies evaluating advantages and risks; 2) if so, what directions should these processes take; 3) and whether that effort should be institutional, national or regional. This chapter reviews some concepts linked to the internationalization of higher education in the world and shows some of the expressions or forms of current internationalization. With the help of the comparative perspective of education, advantages and challenges for Latin America will be identified in this new world context. Among them, how risky it is to remain on the sidelines, but at the same time what are the necessary conditions to be part of it from a Latin American perspective.
