Biochar are porous materials obtained from a wide range of biological sources. Their low cost and reduced environmental impact have promoted their study as potential alternatives for pollutant remediation. In this work, the synthesis of biochar from peanut shells and their capacity for Co(II) and Ni(II) retention were investigated. Different thermal and chemical treatments were applied, and their effects on material performance were evaluated. The resulting biochar, denoted as BCM 1 and BCM 2 according to the temperature conditions T1 and T2 respectively, exhibited a high retention capacity for M(II), achieving up to 99% Ni and 98% Co removal. Surface properties and the interaction between functional groups and metal ions were analyzed using XPS and FTIR. The results suggest a predominant role of oxygen containing functional groups in Ni(II) retention, whereas indications of interactions with aromatic groups of the biochar were observed for Co(II). These findings demonstrate that BCM can be used as a sustainable and low cost precursor to synthesize effective adsorbents for M(II) removal from contaminated waters.
