The purpose of this paper is to establish that Mariano Antonio Barrenechea (1884-1949) interpreted the artist's metaphysics found in The Birth of Tragedy as a superficial or improper apprehension within Nietzschean thought. To this end, the argument presented in the text is directed towards the following objectives: 1) to explore the extent of Barrenechea’s understanding of the central theses of Nietzsche’s work on tragedy; 2) to reconstruct Barrenechea's interpretation, according to which Wagner's entry into Nietzsche's life represents a distortion of the philologist's original Hellenistic projects; 3) to analyze Barrenechea’s reading of some posthumous fragments in which Nietzsche questions the very possibility of Wagnerian musical drama.
