The present article deals with the study of property practices and their relationship with the use and distribution of irrigation water, which we call “water rights”, to focus our attention on the forms of appropriation of this fundamental resource for production in the Central Valleys of Jujuy. The social landscape of the Central Valleys was centered on the social networks for water control, a resource constantly referred to in the different agrarian contracts (land purchase, land lease, water easement), in the practices and in the numerous conflicts that arose from the struggle for access to it throughout the nineteenth century.
