The description that Cornelius Castoriadis makes during the 1980s is well known. According to him, the western societies enter in a «period of generalized conformism» crossed by a «rising tide of insignificance». On the individual level, this process leads to the emergence of comportments characterized by apathy and privatization. In this paper we propose focus on the subjective dimension of this diagnosis. Emphasizing in the perspective on the socialization of Castoriadis and its implications as a theory of subjectivity, we can recover the effects of the collapse of the society's self-representation in the identification processes of individuals. It is possible to show the link of this description with the diagnoses of the author of the late 1950s about privatization and with the analysis centered on the notion of «narcissism». We will highlight the alteration in the way in which individuals relate to the collective order. To finish, we will evalue the incidence of the social-historical order in the constitution of the psyche.
