What is the place of history in Meslier’s Mémoire? How significant was the knowledge of specific historical stories in the priest’s political reflections? According to our hypothesis, the reading of various pamphlets, novels, and chronicles enabled him to understand that the oppression suffered by the parishioners of Etrépigny was not an isolated event but a common feature of the Ancien Régime. Hence, these texts play a crucial role in understanding the scope that Meslier seeks to give to his reflections. If the theological-political submission is not limited to a particular geographical space but has a broad range, the priest’s revolution must have the same range. In short, the fiery lines in which Meslier urges all the earth peoples to unite against the powerful’s oppression might not have been possible without the help of his historical knowledge.
