Within the music field in the city of Buenos Aires over the past 10 year, there can be seen a significant growth of small scale editorial and live music production, which consolidated a so called “independent music scene”. Differentiated from the historically concentrated music market, without giant concerts, transnational companies or massive releases of records, it constitutes a heterogeneous phenomenon with multiple institutions, actors, practices and processes united under the notion of “independence”. Likewise, its development has been accompanied by the parallel consolidation of “culture” as a fashionable term, not only within the social sciences but also into the government agenda for development strategies or particularly associated with the “corporate social responsibility”, from the point of view of the investors. Our aim is to explore, from a qualitative point of view through in-depth interviews, the characteristics of this “scene”, its social actors and practices as well as its conflicts and tensions. We expect that the recognition of the social location of these “cultural” practices is a first decisive step in trying to interpret the current sense they have if we look for a critical understanding of the social totality.
