Prebiotics are currently being investigated as an effective, healthy and relatively inexpensive way to enhance defenses at the intestinal tract level. Within them, fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are still studied to find answers on the beneficial effects that possess by stimulating a specific gut microbiota, bifidobacteria and lactobacils, to defend intestinal cells from colonization of pathogenic organisms. Other important functions are performed in this organ, including the absorption of ions, such as calcium, phosphorus and magnesium, which are required in order to obtain adequate mineralization of bone tissue. The objetive of the work is the bibliographic review of works that the demostrate the positive effects of prebiotics, including the stimulation of the growth of colon-rectal mucosa cells; delay of mucosal atrophy, decreased risk of colon cancer and the effect of these compounds on the absorption of cations on bone tissue. The most important bibliographic references on the fructooligosaccharides topic and their effect on different functions performed in the intestinal tract were reviewed.
