Demanda, producción y circulación de bienes agropecuarios en la región Río de La Plata (siglo XVIII): Balance y perspectivas de investigación

Abstract

Durante los últimos treinta años se han realizado numerosas investigaciones que permiten brindar un panorama completo de la producción agropecuaria que existía en las campañas rioplatenses durante el siglo XVIII. De estos trabajos surge la imagen de una producción agropecuaria diversificada, llevada a cabo por unidades de distinto tamaño y enfocada al abastecimiento de alimentos para el mercado interno, representado especialmente por las ciudades portuarias. Sin embargo, estudios recientes han destacado la importancia de la producción de cueros para la exportación, revelando la existencia de un segmento diferente de la economía agraria, cuya unidad productiva era la vaquería corambrera y no la estancia de rodeo. Investigar la producción de cueros para la exportación requiere la utilización de nuevas fuentes y una nueva estrategia metodológica. Una de las vías posibles es el estudio de la circulación de los bienes pecuarios al interior de la región. Al respecto se presentan los resultados obtenidos para los flujos que confluían en Montevideo en las últimas dos décadas del siglo XVIII y se analizan las perspectivas de investigación para otros períodos y circuitos dentro la región, como los que se orientaban hacia la ciudad de Buenos Aires.During the last thirty years, numerous investigations have been carried out to provide a complete picture of the rural production that existed in the Rio de la Plata campaigns during the 18th century. From these works arises the image of a diversified agricultural production, carried out by units of different sizes and focused on the supply of food for the domestic market, represented especially by the port cities. However, recent studies have highlighted the importance of the production of leathers for export, revealing the existence of a different segment of the agrarian economy, whose productive unit was the wild cattle hunting for leather (“vaquerías corambreras”) and not the rodeo stay. Investigating the production of leather for export requires the use of new sources and a new methodological strategy. One of the possible ways is the study of the circulation of livestock goods within the region. In this regard, the results obtained for the flows that converged in Montevideo in the last two decades of the 18th century are presented, and the research perspectives for other periods and circuits in the region are analyzed, such as those wards the city of Buenos Aires.
