Mariano de Vedia y Mitre was a jurist, historian and professor at the University of Buenos Aires. Between the 1920s and 1950s, he undertook an initiative without precedent in Argentina: a close study of Machiavelli’s work. De Vedia contested Machiavelli’s association with tyranny and immorality, and interpreted him as a republican author who reconciled republicanism, liberalism and democracy. The article reconstructs this interpretation, and, by so doing, addresses two further issues: the crisis of «Liberal Argentina» in the interwar years, and the relationship between republicanism and liberalism within Argentine political thought.
