In several places, Borges has referred to the "culto de los mayores" as one of the central motifs of his work. It is, in fact, a topic that can be traced from his first collection of poems - and even earlier, in the unpublished project Montaña de gloria - to his last books. In this paper, focusing on the texts that take on the figure of Isidoro Suárez, the writer's great-grandfather and an independence war hero, we intend to show the shifts that can be observed in the ways Borges approaches the figures of his elders, from almost unrestricted devotion to a perspective that includes (self-)criticism and parody.
