This article analyzes the concept of authoritarian statism coined by Nicos Poulantzas in the 1970s to define the new democratic form of the capitalist state that arises with the internationalization of the relations of production and the social division of labor. The particularity of this notion lies in its articulation, rather than stark opposition, of democracy and authoritarianism, by showing that political domination in this phase demands an increasingly authoritarian modulation of power. The hypothesis proposed is that authoritarian statism not only describes a phenomenon linked to the early consolidation of neoliberalism in European social formations, but also formulates, “in a practical state”, a political problem with repercussions in the current national and global context. In this sense, it is suggested that Poulantzas' elaborations provide some keys to understand the crisis of democracy currently experienced by Latin American societies.
