Abstract

In this contribution, we trace the development of knowledge on the Patagonian slab window, from early 20th-century observations and mapping to the transformativeimpact of plate tectonics and, in particular, the foundational work of Dr. Victor A. Ramos. His contributions paved the way for more sophisticated researchin the 21st century, integrating advanced geochemical, geophysical, and numerical techniques that have significantly enhanced our understanding of this geodynamicfeature along the southernmost margin of South America. Despite substantial progress, many questions remain. Here, we review the topic, emphasising Dr.Ramos’s contributions and examining how past insights continue to shape current perspectives on slab window formation. Finally, we outline key unresolved issues,highlighting opportunities for future research.
