Phonological awareness is a widely studied skill due to its relevance to the development of reading and writing as complex linguistic abilities during early childhood. Based on the fundamentals of phonological awareness as a predictor of linguistic literacy, this study proposes a playful approach to promote its development in the classroom. The objective is to offer the educational community a teaching tool in the form of a self-designed board game aimed at exercising the identification of words’ initial sounds and final rhymes. Designed to be implemented either at school or domestic contexts, the /eko/ game proposes a phonological matching system using illustrated cards with different difficulty levels in terms of sounds’ identification complexity. To this end, the guidelines for the /eko/ game are presented, the linguistic criteria for word selection (prolongable and non-prolongable initial sounds and final rhymes) are described, and the graphic considerations for the illustrations’ design are detailed. In order to provide a framework for the applicability of the /eko/ game in the classroom, and following the guidelines on the Diseño Curricular Provincial de Mendoza, a didactic intervention sequence is proposed to be implemented during the first years of primary school. The /eko/ game is offered as a free, open-access educational resource to motivate and strengthen phonological awareness from the early years of literacy, a fundamental skill for the development of metalinguistic abilities such as reading and writing.
