From the perspective of social anthropology, and influenced by Antonio Gramsci, I present a critical analysis of “green growth” and its fundamental principles. I focus on the power dimension that sustains this proposed “solution” to global warming and the current environmental crisis, and attempt to answer a question posed by techno-economic critiques of the energy transition (the basis of green growth). It refers to the reasons why green growth is still a policy of multilateral agencies, despite the empirical evidence that disputes its viability which is just starting to appear in projections that tend to zero and negative growth rates. I argue that the answer to this question will not come from analyzing technical or economic possibilities of the transition, but from weighing the power conditions that sustain the imagination of a capitalism non-reliant on fossil energy.
