Juan Carlos Tedesco has stated that the educational system basically fulfilled a political function in Argentina during the XIX century. Rapid economic progress produced great optimism in the political leadership, which did not see the relevance of orienting teaching towards technical training, a basic principle of any modern society. This article, which does not contradict Tedesco’s (1970) hypothesis, tries to complement it by asserting that the political leadership had serious problems it considered to be priorities, and due to this, put aside implementing a technical orientation for teaching. In other words, this is not a question of politicians blind to the economic function of education, but rather, politicians who felt there were more urgent difficulties to face, and solving them implied strengthening the political function of public education even further.
