A profound transformation of the Pampean cultural landscape took place in the second half of the nineteenth century, which transformed the so-called “desert” into the economic heart of the agro-export model implemented by the Argentine liberal elite. We discuss here a temporally and spatially localized part of this crucial process, taking as an analytical scale the territory of modern Carlos Casares County (Buenos Aires Province), between 1869 and 1877. At that time, the local landscape was marked by the presence of the frontier line, a set of military facilities designed to signal the effective presence of the national state in the area, to protect civilian establishments from raids by indigenous groups, and to serve as an offensive platform for the eventual continuation of the process of appropriation of the indigenous lands located to the west and south. Through the consideration of documentary written and graphic sources, we describe the material and symbolic aspects of this process of modification of the physic and social space, pointing out the different interventions in the space carried out to “domesticate the desert”. Likewise, we assess the material effects of this process, examining its material and symbolic traces as well as their persistence over time.
