Ne topic of healing by the word appears in the work of the 4th century monk-philosopher Evagrius Ponticus in various forms. Picking up on a classical heritage, the Pontine thinker attributes to the word a power to modify psychic dispositions. Among the ways where this healing power of the word can be realized, there is one of particular relevance that seems to address the deepest nature of what Evagrius himself considers to be the very illness of the soul. We refer to the word uttered by the one who is called, in Evagrian thought, “gnostic”. Ne word of the gnostic, in fact, seems to be thought of by Evagrius in a therapeutic context insofar as it can contribute decisively to the cure of self-ignorance.
