This article aims to explore the projections of the gaucho myth – foundation stone for Argentine national identity–in AngloAmerican, Brazilian and Italian translations and rewritings of José Hernández’s Martín Fierro. Based on the fact that every nationalist project needs to define itself in relation to the foreign, gaucho myth derivations and resignifications will be analyzed with special focus on identity constructions, inside and outside the binomial national-foreign. Analyzing the corpus comprised of translations and translators’ rewritings, we came to acknowledge the presence of different gaucho myth rhetorics that permeate foreign rewritings of Hernandez’s work. Likewise, such analysis provided evidence of an image convergence between Argentine identity and the work´s readership itself.
