TDuring the last decade, the State has recovered a central role in social science. This article offers a selective review of the main contributions in the fi elds of political science and economics, focusing on three main issues. First, it reviews classic and contemporary conceptual approaches to the phenomenon of stateness. Second, it lists and assesses the strengths and limitations of different approaches of measurement. Third, it reviews empirical regularities regarding the relation between (i) the State and regime type and (ii) the State and development, focusing on existing disagreements about the causal mechanisms that produce them. Overall, although much progress has been made, there is still need for greater conceptual precision and empirical rigor.
