The Latin American context and its high rates of urban informality have been analyzed from various social disciplines. The link established between neighborhood organizations and the State has been one of the topics of study, although there is an overrepresentation of what happens in large cities, in relation to intermediate cities. This work is the product of an ethnographic investigation that aimed to review the neighborhood organization practices of those who live in informal settlements and the way in which they dispute with the State to achieve the urban integration of their neighborhood in a medium-sized Patagonian city. We are interested in examining the way in which the daily intervention of the State in the settlements was built and the effects that this had on the forms of organization of the neighbors, that is, on neighborhood politics. The fieldwork consisted of interviews and field records, as well as the analysis of journalistic sources and official documents. Through the survey of the meanings and forms of state classification of space in the Las Américas neighborhood, we analyze the relationship between residents and the municipality. Based on a relational understanding of state practices, our study allowed us to see how the channels of political representation recognized by the State, in this case the neighborhood Neighborhood Unions, influenced the elections of referents in the neighborhood and how the neighbors disputed the forms of organization imposed by the State.
