Methane production from swine slurry was evaluated by using three inoculums: rumen (I1), stabilized swine slurry (I2) and sludge sewage (I3). Experimental design with four treatments by duplicate and ANOVA were applied to evaluate the significance of treatments. Results indicated that I2 and I3 achieved the highest percentage of organic matter removal (close to 50% in terms of VS and COD) in relation to control test and the higher methane production reaching 0.25 L CH4 /g VS. The use of rumen did not produce significant differences in methane production and organic matter removal did not overmatch 15%. The evolution of VFA and alkalinity explained the observed two stages kinetics for methane production showing that for a complex mixture of substances partially solubilized as swine slurry, the methanogenic phase could be the rate-limiting-step of the global methane production rate.
