The aim of this paper is to discuss some of the the main anthropological concepts that could be find in a book by Joseph Hazzāyā that deal with the three stages of the spiritual life, taken as three steps of the self knowledge. I will argue mostly with the first stage in order to conclude about the Evagrius of Pontus’ influence on the spiritual theology of Hazzāyā, the optimistic feature of his anthropology and the central place of freedom in his thought.
