This paper covers various analyses that R. Walton carried out of M. Merleau-Ponty’s thought, which accurately reveal their relations and tensions with the phenomenology of E. Husserl. Walton addresses the methodological paradoxes of reduction considered by Merleau-Ponty, as well as his notions of the opacity of the world, ontological contingency and the simultaneity of the incompossible, among others, pointing out their difficulties and the different interpretative options open to them. Linking the Husserlian analyses on the living present with those of Merleau-Ponty on sensitivity, we propose to understand those notions from the basis of nature’s generativity as a source of novelty, singularity and freedom.
