The Universidad de Mar del Plata, which had been nationalized in 1975, had already experienced a series of repressive rises as from 1974, which increased dramatically as the coup d’etat of March 1976 came closer. With the establishment of the military dictatorship, marked continuities in the administration of this university occured, together with a series of new directives, mainly bureaucratic. On the one hand, a great part of the repressive actions had already been implemented; for example, many undergraduate programs and departments of social sciences and their implications were eliminated. On the other hand, the administration lead by the two civilian chancellors of the Universidad de Mar del Plata had, as a salient characteristic, the faithful application of the directives imposed by the different Argentine ministers of Culture and Education. These policies intensified the process of ‘depoliticization’ and the quest for ‘order’ among authorities, teachers, and graduate and undergraduate students. In addition, they imposed new bureaucratic meassures aiming at controlling budgets and student practices, like quotas in undergraduate courses and entrance examinations.
