The present article proposes a systematization and analysis of the discussions developed in the (post)laclausian conceptual universe around the ideological status of populism and, more specifically, around the possibility of defining as populists the emerging global “radical right” that cross the contemporary horizon. Our approach will be crossed by a specific theoretical-political emphasis different from that proposed by other recent analyzes of the topic (Appleton, 2022; Biglieri 2020): following certain psychoanalytic guidelines, We consider that the debate on the “populist question” is framed by a more general discussion about the status of the imaginary register in the construction of political identities. Taking this element as the guiding axis, we analyze which theoretical criterion are mobilized to sustain the association between populism and the radical right and which to reject it, as well as what would also be the possible conceptual differences between such political processes and those called “left-wing populisms”.
