Yutopián is a multi-component archaeological site, located on a hill in the semi-arid valleys area of the Northwestern Argentina. The site comprises domestic structures from the Formative period (500 BC to 1000 AD) that differ in location and contents from their contemporaries. Excavations have revealed that some characteristics of the models of chronological succession (periodization), cultural transmission and geographic distribution (culture areas) of pre-Hispanic societies, merit a revision. Yutopián occupies a prominent topographical position in the landscape; it contains indicators of metallurgical production in a domestic context, and ceramic styles similar to those of Candelaria and Tafí, characteristic of the eastern Andean slopes, together with pottery in the Condorhuasi, La Manga, and Rio Diablo styles. Finally, the site shows repeated use of the same location for successive human settlements from the first centuries of our era to the end of pre-Hispanic period.
