This article starts from the assumption that, although reading and writing are two social practices which are generally considered in a relationship of mutual dependence, there is numerous evidence that in their history have not always been necessarily joint instances, both in relation to their social uses as well as for the practices and specific speeches around its education. Therefore this paper aims to characterize the complex relationships between writing and reading through a review of certain historical configurations with respect to both practices, with a specific focus on the cultural and sociopolitical significances on which they are founded.
