This paper showcases the results of petrographic analysis conducted on 49 samples of decorated and plain pottery. These samples were obtained from the formative sites of Casa Chávez Montículos and Corral Grande 1, both located in Antofagasta de la Sierra (ANS), Catamarca Province. Through the petrographic characterization of the ceramics, we aimed to identify different technological traditions that would allow us to pinpoint the potential source of the vessels, taking into account that in both sites the decorative styles are close to ceramics from the Puna, northern Chile and the mesothermal valleys of Northwestern Argentina. The analysis recognized 12 compositional types, whose petrographic characteristics allowed us to conclude that during the Formative period at ANS, various ceramic styles coexisted which were manufactured following different production guidelines and used different sources for its raw materials. We posit that a large part of the ceramic assemblage analyzed was produced locally, while a smaller quantity comes from the valleys and ravines of the Northwest Argentina and yet another one, used clay from the Antofalla region.
