The indigenous peoples living in the province of Salta have historically been positioned in a situation of subalternity and vulnerability in terms of access to territorial, cultural, linguistic and health rights. In this article, we aim to understand the health and environmental conditions prior to the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic and the way in which preexisting inequalities in access to the health system, service infrastructure and natural resources have made visible and/or aggravated the processes of health-disease-care-death in native populations in the north of Salta. Through the analysis of various secondary sources and in-depth interviews, among the results we highlight a series of emerging dimensions that become unavoidable when understanding the social and territorial determinations of health in indigenous contexts.
