The permanence of warlike conjuncture during the first half of the nineteenth century provoked a constant pressure on the part of the revolutionary government first and the provincial governments later, in order to satisfy the needs of subsistence of the troops. In this frame, the objective of this study is to estimate the economic burden of the costs of war to the treasury of a small mediterranean province from the current northwestern of Argentina. We propose to reconstruct the series of income and expenditure from the Declaration of Independence (1816) until the adoption of the Constitution (1853); to classify the main investment categories of tax expenditures in the different periods and, finally, to estimate the relative weight of the costs of war in the set of fiscal accounts of the province.
