The article compares how Jean Paul Sartre and Walter Benjamin studied collective memories. Both authors are situated in a polar contrast, in which the first one shows a definition of the social meaning that subordinate them to practices, while the second one illustrates the opposite. In this way, the study of their text allow the recognition of theoretical and methodological effects of the interpretation of memories in terms of practices or signification.
