The relative emergence of weeds in the crop generates a strong impact on its yield. The objective of this work was to validate the use of a predictive model of Avena fatua emergence for decision making in real field conditions. Wheat yield was evaluated at three planting times: before, during and after an A. fatua emergence peak (date 1, 2 and 3) based on the predictions of the AVEFA on-line* model. Two cultivars of different competitive ability (ACA 303 and ProINTA Huenpan) were compared at sowing densities of 150 and 300 seeds m-2 and an additional treatment combining the lowest density with a post-emergence application of pinoxaden (5% EC, 800 cc formulated product ha-1 ). A follow-up of the emergence of the weed was carried out, observing correspondence with the predictions of the model. The highest yields were obtained for dates 1 and 3 in combination with the application of pinoxaden at low planting density. Although the ACA 303 treatment sown on date 1 with 150 seeds m-2 + pinoxaden was the most productive in relative terms, Huenpan with twice the density and for the same date did not show statistically significant differences (p=0.07), evidencing a greater competitiveness throughout the period. The results obtained show that the simulation model turned out to be a valuable tool for planning and decision-making to minimize weed damage, also allowing the incorporation of variables such as density and competitive cultivars in a concrete proposal for Integrated Management.
