This paper aims to analyze some of the potential effects of the regional integration process brought about by the MERCOSUR, by studying the degree of trade dependence that Argentina has in its relationship with Brazil (understanding trade dependence as trade relations that are generated and maintained only at the regional level), and the patterns of specialization of such bilateral trade. In analyzing the determinants of regional short-term trade, it is worth noting that there remains a strong dependence on the Brazilian market for Argentine sectors having a higher bilateral specialization (especially the wheat value chain), or a strong intra-industry trade (automotive sector and chemicals, among others). This presents a strong dependence on exports of these sectors in relation to the growth of the Brazilian economy. In terms of sectorial specialization, Argentine bilateral specialization is clearly lower in terms of technological content than Brazilians, which raises the problem of the impact Argentina’ bilateral specialization may have in attaining high and stable economic growth in the long term. Combining trade dependence and the Argentine bilateral specialization pattern, we can appreciate its relative inability to generate dynamic comparative advantages based on the use of the expanded market. Finally, the paper reconsiders the strategy of the generation of dynamic comparative advantages in the context of a strong presence of multinational firms in the structure of bilateral trade.
